Scope:

The 21st century is characterized by the appearance and use of innovative technologies. This situation has produced a tremendous impact on medicine and biology promoting the shift from a reactive medicine to a preventive medicine through novel technology enabled concepts and services. Furthermore, the challenges associated to societal changes are demanding the removal of current barriers related to the lack of knowledge required to create new opportunities to people to prevent and manage chronic conditions, the elderly, and the handicapped. New paradigms are necessary for these novel concepts and practices to be socially and economically sustainable, and respectful with the environment. In this context, it is recognized the need to integrate advances in information technology, communications and networking leading to a true convergence engineering. This special issue aims at reporting the state of the art regarding advances in health informatics, e-health, m-health and information technology in medicine. Extended version of papers presented at the 13th Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing (MEDICON 2013) will be eligible for full review for publication consideration. We invite authors to submit their extended papers and contributions addressing (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • Wireless health technologies and body sensor networks, participatory and personal health systems
  • mHealth, eHealth, uHealth
  • Ambient assisted living, smart homes
  • ITC convergence engineering
  • Health information management, personal and electronic health records
  • Knowledge discovery and management for personalized health, decision support methods and systems
